The Artspace Artists Association invites the public to visit the Artspace Holiday Exhibition. This exhibition features over 45 members of the Artspace Artists Association. Resident artists will present special exhibitions in their studios and non-resident members will fill the hallways and lobby with their most recent works, all unique holiday gifts! This exhibition includes a great diversity of media, from sculpture, fiber art, collage, mixed media, acrylics, oils, metalwork, ceramics and photography.
Duet: Paintings and Pottery, featuring the pottery of Susan Parrish and the paintings of Annette Rogers, is on display in the Upfront Gallery at Artspace. The two artists, although working in completely different mediums, both offer their own response to the natural environment.
For the past twenty years, Parrish's work in clay centered on wheel-thrown functional pottery. However, after Parrish moved to Artspace several years ago, her work began to change directions. With the inspiration and encouragement of the artists, she began to move forward with a new body of work. Each one of a kind piece is sculptural, painterly and completely handbuilt. Her teapots and bowls will be featured in the upcoming publications from Lark Press, 500 Teapots and 500 Bowls.
Throughout Rogers' thirty-year painting career, she has explored many media, but her current work is created with a layering technique in acrylics on paper and canvas. She has an interest in surface space and texture, which results in work which is intuitive, complex, and mysterious. Rogers' paintings have been exhibited in local, regional, and national shows and she has been honored with many awards. Her work in included in corporate and private collections in the U.S. and abroad.
Through collaboration in preparation for this exhibition, Parrish and Rogers have inspired and stimulated each other, yet each has retained her own personal expression. The work shows a richness of color, texture, and form.
Functional Fine Art & Craft, National Juried Exhibition of Contemporary Decorative Arts and Design, will be on view in Artspace's Gallery 1. The exhibition recognizes individual artists involved in the design and creation of contemporary decorative arts.
Craftspeople and artists working in a variety of media were encouraged to submit up to three original works of art to be considered for this national biennial juried exhibit. The work was selected by juror, Melissa Post, Curator of the Mint Museum of Craft + Design, Charlotte, NC.
Post will announce the award winners on Dec. 6, 2002. Awards presented will be: Best of Show ($750), Award of Merit ($500), Award of Distinction ($250) and 2 Honorable Mentions (non-monetary).
The exhibition, stream of consciousness
features works by Ellen Burgin in Artspace's Gallery 2. Burgin's
paintings are deeply personal reactions to life experiences, in
which she layers color on top of color, covering the entire canvas
or surface. Her energetically paints image on top of image, even
turning the canvas upside down and
layering all or portions of images with new ideas.
After spending Feb. of 2002 in an artist's residency program at the Vermont Studio Center, Burgin set aside her acrylic paints and began exploring encaustics (wax) on wood panels, and more recently, oil on canvas. The change of media has renewed her spirit and rejuvenated her work - causing a shift in imagery as well.
Burgin, a native of Marion, NC, moved to the Triangle in 1991 to attend UNC-Chapel Hill to major in painting and drawing. She received her MFA from Louisiana State University and has exhibited work in group and solo exhibitions throughout the South. Burgin has received many awards and honors, including the Regional Artist Grant from the United Arts Councils of Raleigh and Wake County. Burgin is represented by the Raleigh Contemporary Gallery.
