Faculty members of the Converse College Art and Design Department will showcase their most recent works during the annual Art and Design Faculty Exhibit , on view from Nov. 19 through Dec. 13, 2002, in the Milliken Gallery on the campus of Converse College in Spartanburg, SC. The exhibit will feature a diverse group of styles and media including painting, drawing, printing, photography, sculpture, and ceramics.
Among the works that will be featured is a
visual presentation of a sculpture project by Mayo Mac Boggs that
is intended as a memorial to the victims of the World Trade Center
tragedy on Sept. 11, 2001. Boggs, Professor and chair of the Department
of Art and Design at Converse, has been working on the sculpture
since that fateful day. This particular effort has gleamed international
attention as Boggs has been invited to enter the sculpture into
the fourth edition of the "International Biennial of Contemporary
Art, which will be held Dec. 6 - 14, 2003 in Florence, Italy.
Along with his WTC memorial proposal he will be exhibiting scale
models of sculpture for other projects.
Merilyn Field, director of the school's Art Therapy program, will
exhibit a mixed presentation of stone sculpture and oil paintings.
Field is a registered art therapist whose enthusiasm for the many
facets of art therapy is evident in her work with students and
community groups. She is a member of the American Art Therapy
Association, the National Coalition of Art Therapy Educators,
and a leader in the South Carolina Art Therapy Association.
Teresa Prater, associate professor of studio art, will present four figurative charcoal drawings and artist books that were created during her summer residency at The Hambridge Center in Rabun Gap, GA. Prater primarily works with charcoal on paper, using the figure and supporting symbolic images to create high contrast narrative environments. Her drawings and paintings have been shown in twenty-three one-person exhibitions and over 100 exhibitions nationally and in Mexico and Switzerland. Several of her drawings have won top awards in juried competitions. Professor Prater was one of six visual artists selected by the city of Spartanburg to participate in the Cultural Exchange Program in Winterthur, Switzerland, where she exhibited her charcoal drawings and participated in a one-week residency. Prater serves as President for the Spartanburg Artists Guild and is active with the Arts Partnership of Spartanburg. She is a member of the Center for Book Arts in NYC and Southeastern College Art Conference.
Douglas Whittle, associate professor of art, will be presenting painted landscapes. Whittle's work has been exhibited in the Krakow Academy of Art in Poland, The Center of Contemporary Art in Miami, FL, The Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland, FL, The Greenville County Museum of Art in SC, The St. Petersburg Museum of Art, and The Capitol Gallery in the State Capitol Building in Tallahassee, FL, The Columbus Museum of Art in GA, and The Huntington Museum of Art in WV and in many university and commercial galleries across the US.
Other faculty members who will participate
in the exhibit include: Dianne Bagnal, director of art education;

his skills and knowledge as an architect to teach Converse interior
design students about interior construction, space planning, and
perspective rendering; Donn Britten Ping, associate professor
