Myersart Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Pottery Works by Mary Mason
Myersart Gallery/Clay on Camden in Charlotte,
NC, has chosen potter Mary Mason as Nov.'s featured artist. Mason's
signature autumn colors and beautiful, enlarged re-creations of
fruit and vegetables are especially fitting for the Thanksgiving
holiday season.
Growing up on her grandparent's farm, Mason spent her childhood
in the woods, fields, gardens and with animals.
"I was in awe of beauty in the simplest moments such as a drop of dew on a leaf, a mushroom peaking up through the leaves or a snail on a mossy log," the artist recalls. "My passion for clay began during my senior year of college. I found that the medium allowed me to pursue my memories in a three-dimensional form that communicated my profound appreciation of the beauty and simplicity of nature," Mason adds.
"The Yixing potters of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in China added vegetables, animals, insects and other organic forms to their teapots. I am inspired by these intricately detailed pots," she adds.
Mason enjoys taking items from nature, such
as mushrooms, gourds, fruits, snails, turtles and other organic
items from a very recognizable form to a more abstract fluid form.
"I am using the colors of mushrooms, fruits, vegetables,
leaves and earth in satin and matte glazes, thereby reflecting
the soft subtle shades of these organic forms. It has been a challenge
and a pleasure for me, with the help of my mentor, Dottie Baker,
to create six glazes of an organic nature for the oxidation environment.
Economics has made it necessary for me to stay with oxidation,"
Mason explains.
