Artspace in Raleigh, NC, is presenting new exhibitions including: Twenty-Five, featuring works by John Loomis in the Artspace Lobby from Nov. 5 - 27, 2004; Construction, Collages & Color, featuring works by Rachel Nicholson in the Artspace Upfront Gallery from Nov. 5 - 27, 2004; Artspace Annual Holiday Exhibition, featuring works by Artspace member artists in Artspace Hallways and Studios, through Jan. 21, 2005; and Fine Contemporary Craft Biennial Juried Exhibition in Gallery 1, from Nov. 20 - Jan. 15, 2005.

Twenty-Five is a collection of 25 contemporary color and black & white photographs by John Loomis, including work from his 10 years experience as a photojournalist around America and selections from personal documentary projects. Twenty-Five is curated in celebration of the artist's 25th birthday, and also in an effort to give his older work one final publication before wiping the slate clean to pursue new projects.

John Loomis

Loomis is an award-winning freelance photographer based in Durham, NC, and the owner of Blueeyes Photography. A native of Florida, Loomis specializes in photojournalism and contributes regularly to national publications like Time, U.S. News & World Report, and The New York Times. In addition, he also works as a designer, consultant, and editor, and publishes the online photography magazine, Blueeyes Magazine.

Rachel Nicholson

Rachel Nicholson primarily works experimentally to develop new methods within the realm of felt. She experiments with both the traditional wet technique of felt-making dating to prehistoric times, and a dry method, or needle punching, which has evolved in the twentieth-century. She enjoys the risks involved with pioneering new techniques and the problem solving one must do to produce a desired result. Nicholson challenges herself to create work that fits within our contemporary environment, venturing beyond the strong ethnic heritage that often accompanies the medium. Each piece is created by intuitively responding to color, texture, and the many organic forms within nature.

Nicholson graduated from Meredith College in 1996 with a BA in Studio Art and has been exclusively working in felt for the past five years. She received a United Arts Council Project Grant in 1999 and has been a member of the Artspace Artists Association since 2000. Nicholson plans to continue her experimentation with color and developing new and innovative techniques in felt making.

The Artspace Artists Association invites the public to visit Artspace's Holiday Exhibition, opening in conjunction with the First Friday Gallery Walk on Nov. 5, 2004. This exhibition features over 45 members of the Artspace Artists Association. Resident artists will present special exhibitions in their studios and non-resident members will fill the hallways with their most recent works - all unique holiday gifts! This exhibition includes a great diversity of media, from sculpture, fiber art, collage, mixed media, acrylics, oils, metalwork, ceramics and photography.

Every other year, Artspace invites craftspeople and artists working in a variety of media to enter Fine Contemporary Craft, a national juried exhibition recognizing individual artists involved in the design and creation of functional and sculptural contemporary crafts. Craftspeople and artists from all over the country submitted work in a variety of media. This year's juror was Sandra Blain, Director Emeritus, Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts, Gatlinburg, TN and Professor of Ceramics, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN.

Blain's, background includes a BS in Art Education from Northern Illinois University and an MFA in Ceramics from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Having worked in administration and teaching since 1964, she has a diverse background related to educational programming including classes, conferences, seminars, gallery programming, fundraising, and public relations. Her public service includes involvement with national, regional, state, and local craft organizations, often serving as a board member, consultant, grant panelist, and exhibition juror. As a practicing artist, her clay pieces have been exhibited in juried and invitational exhibitions throughout the country, with reviews and photographs in various media publications and catalogs. Recent awards include the Southern Highland Craft Guild Lifetime Achievement, the Tennessee Art Education Administrator of the Year, Tennessee Arts Commission Gordon Holl Outstanding Arts Administrator, American Craft Council Fellow, Tennessee Artist Craftsmen's Association Honorary Member, and the Knoxville Arts Council Artist Award.
