Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia, SC, Features Works by Guy Lipscomb

The Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia, SC, is presenting the exhibit, On Solid Ground: Paintings by Guy Lipscomb, in the Museum's SouthTrust Bank Focus Gallery and the NBSC Focus Gallery. Approximately 20 works by the South Carolina artist will be on view through Dec. 12, 2004, and will represent Lipscomb's two major stylistic trends throughout his career his earlier work in watercolor and his later, more abstract work in acrylics.

Lipscomb was inducted into the American Watercolor Society in the summer of 2004. First formed in 1867 as The American Painters in Water Color, the organization changed its name in 1878 to The American Watercolor Society, and has continued their annual exhibition to the present time. The annual juried exhibition is open to all artists worldwide with awards now exceeding more than $30,000 with over 10 medals annually. Active members number approximately 500. In order to be inducted into The American Watercolor Society, the artist must be awarded first prize out of all the entries, three different years.

A resident of Columbia, Lipscomb has taught painting workshops across the United States and Canada, and his book, Go With the Flow, has become a staple in watercolor instruction classes. He is a co-founder of the South Carolina Watercolor Society and Springmaid Workshops. A long-time supporter of the Columbia Museum of Art, Lipscomb served as the Columbia Museum of Art's board of trustees president from 1971 to 1973.

The Columbia Museum of Art is South Carolina's premier international art museum with extraordinary collections of European and American fine and decorative art that span centuries. Founded in 1950, the museum opened its new building in 1998 by transforming an urban department store to a sleek and airy, light-filled space with 25 galleries. The collections include masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance and Baroque from the Samuel H. Kress Collection, works by significant furniture and silver makers, as well as modern and contemporary art from the present time.
