Hilton Head Art League Gallery on Hilton Head Island, SC, Features Works by Vickie Jourdan

The Hilton Head Art League in Hilton Head Island, SC, is presenting the exhibition, Enjoying the Journey, featuring collages and mixed media works by local artist, Vickie Jourdan. The exhibit will be on view through Nov. 20, 2004.

Raised in a suburb of New York City, Jourdan began her career in interior design after obtaining her degree from Parsons School of Design. She worked in the interior design departments in department stores like B. Altman and Co. in New York, and on the west coast in San Francisco for an office furniture business, followed by twelve years in Richmond, VA.

Since 1998, Jourdan has turned her attention and talent toward creative art. Having taken classes in watercolor, pastel, oil, mixed media and collage, she has settled on collage as her medium of choice. She is currently experimenting with hand-stained tissue papers, acrylics, watercolors and inks to create unique compositions of color and design. "I love playing with color and incorporating interesting textures in my work. It's so exciting and challenging to create a pleasant work of art in a non-objective way," says Jourdan.

Jourdan attributes her interest in collage to a class at Queens College in mixed media and collage techniques. She is now enjoying a wonderful journey of creative experimentation in these mediums. Says Jourdan, "Design, composition, texture and the play of colors against one another all contribute to the excitement I have in creating paintings that express my ever changing emotions, moods and fleeting moments. When I begin a painting, I really don't have a vision of the finished product. My paintings evolve from the love of creating something pleasing to the eye that will pique the viewer's imagination."

Jourdan answers the questions about understanding abstract art in this way, "What's there to understand? To me, it's the expression of an artist's innermost feelings, their experiences and their world, presented in a creative form for all to see, enjoy and contemplate."

The Hilton Head Art League is a not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to promoting the visual arts in the community and increasing the art skills of its members.
