Piazza Gallery Art & Framing in Mt. Pleasant, SC, Features Works by Marilyn Stevens
Piazza Gallery Art & Framing in Mt. Pleasant, SC, will feature the watercolors of Hanahan, SC, resident, Marilyn Stevens, from Nov. 1 - 30, 2004.
Stevens is best known for her paintings of
the Cooper River Bridges. Born in West Virginia, grew up on a
farm in Ohio, then living many years in California, Stevens moved
to Charleston sixteen years ago with her husband, John, who is
pastor of Northside Baptist Church, in North Charleston, SC.
Stevens started out as a nursing major and completed 3 years of
college. She has been a homemaker, mother and pastor's wife, with
art being only a hobby until her move to Charleston. Stevens loves
taking photographs of downtown Charleston scenes of interest and
history. Then, working in watercolors, pen & ink, or pencil
she creates memorable drawings and paintings; her favorites being
her Charleston gate scenes due to her love for the lush green
foliage, brick walkways, and wrought iron work of this area.
Stevens most famous work, The Cooper River Bridges, gave
her more difficulty then any of her other paintings. But, her
picture of the Bridges can now be found on Giclee prints, packaged
note cards, tote bags, throws, pillows, and coffee mugs.
Stevens credits another artist in the Charleston area who encouraged
her to sell her works to the public. Says Stevens, "Making
art a business was a new step for me. In our years in church ministry,
I've used artwork for drawings, paintings, children's visualized
stories, songs, and object lessons plus many other open doors
of opportunity. Of course, not finding time to paint is frustrating.
It's one of the most enjoyable things which I could spend hours
at. That, and the fact I write poetry. One day I hope to combine
my paintings and poetry in booklet form."
"Artwork has been a big part of life for me since childhood," says Stevens, adding. "Coming from an artistic family, I have had much encouragement and example. Watercolor painting has held a special interest and fascination for me out of all the art media I've used. And, since moving to the Charleston area, I find myself painting more and more the historic sites with their intricate wrought iron and lovely brick walkways and courtyards, as well as the many gorgeous flowers of the South." Stevens continues, "The ministry and people are our lives and come first. Proceeds from art sales go back into the business or to missions. I give the Lord credit for any talent I have and want to use it for His glory. It's been a great blessing to help our own missionary kids overseas as well as other mission projects."
