November Issue 2004
Studio W in Camden, SC, Features Works by Jon Kral
Camden, SC's newest gallery, Studio W will
present an exhibition of works by award-winning photojournalist,
Jon Kral. The exhibit will open on Nov. 17 and continues through
Dec. 17, 2004.
The exhibit will show photographs from the book, Saving Leslie
Jones, Ribirth Of Spirit In Horse And Man, a result of a partnership
between the award-winning team of sportswriter Dave Joseph and
photojournalist Jon Kral. The book focuses on the behind-the-scenes
activities of America's most noted horse rescue organization,
the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) and its sister organizations.
Many racing aficionados know Kral from the award-winning images
he created in his book Hotbloods, Beyond The Winners Circle.
The book takes you to the "backside" and gives the viewer
a look into the world of thoroughbred racing, in prose and photographs.
Kral was raised on the edge of Cattle country
in Ft. Pierce, FL. He developed a love for the land and its heritage,
which led him to begin seriously documenting it in 1983. That
work eventually, became his first book, Cracker, Florida's
Enduring Cowboys. Already a photojournalist on the international
scene, his documentation of the inhumane prison conditions in
Caracus, Venezuela led to the closing of a maximum security facility
and earned him a Pulitzer Prize finalist ranking.
Kral's work infiltrating and documenting youth gangs in the south
yielded him the respected Robert F. Kennedy Award. He is a five-time
Pulitzer nominee and has recently retired from a 17-year career
at the Miami Herald.
Studio W will have a selection of Kral's books
available for sale.
