November Issue 2004
Theatre Art Galleries in High Point, NC, Features New Exhibits
The Theatre Art Galleries in High Point, NC, will present Come and See: A Photojournalist's Journey into the World of Mother Teresa from Nov. 6 through Dec. 21, 2004. Other exhibits will also be offered at the same time.
Come and See is a first-time exhibition of photographs from a recently published book by Atlanta photojournalist, Linda Schaefer, who lived and worked with Mother Teresa (1910-1997) and the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India. The title of the book and this show derives from the response that Mother Teresa gave to Schaefer when she requested the opportunity to photograph her. She came to work at an orphanage in Calcutta. A relationship grew between the two women that culminated in Schaefer being given permission to photograph whatever she felt would show the world the real environment in which this remarkable woman and her nuns and volunteers lived and worked.
TAG has arranged to have the best of Schaefer's photographs enlarged, printed and mounted for exhibition in TAG's Main Gallery. Tatum, Toomey & Whicker, a local advertising agency and commercial photography studio, generously donated the printing services. Schaefer's views of India include the vibrant colors of the culture and the squalid poverty of the society. Yet there is a predominant spirituality imbued in all.
Mother Teresa of Calcutta was a Roman Catholic nun, but her impact was universal. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and recognized in 2002 by Pope John Paul II for performing a miracle and in 2003 was beatified - steps toward sainthood. Mother Teresa dedicated her life to the comfort and care of the needy, sick, and poor. Her life, here works, her writings have inspired people of all faiths and nationalities. Even after death, Mother Teresa's message of love and compassion speak to the world today.
Linda Schaefer is a nationally known photojournalist. She worked for CNN for several years and earned a BFA in photography and an MA in journalism from New York University. She has appeared on Good Morning America and has been interviewed by PBS, BBC and CNN among other news sources.
Showing in the Hallway Gallery at TAG are paintings by Mexican immigrant, Silvia Chavez. My Dreams of a Girl is a charming exhibition by this self-taught artist who portrays visions of her past life in Mexico.
The High Point Fine Art Guild will be exhibiting their Fall Juried Show in Gallery B.
Artwork from DePaul Academy Preschool at Christ the King Multicultural Center is showing in the Kaleidoscope Youth Gallery.
