Exhibitions and Retail Shop Open at Upstairs Gallery in Tryon, NC
Three new exhibitions and a brand new retail shop have opened at the Upstairs Gallery in Tryon, NC. All three exhibits will be on view through Dec. 18, 2004.
Curators' Choice is a thoughtful selection by the gallery's Curating Committee of some favorite artists including many new faces for the Upstairs. The artists are Betty Clark, David J.P. Hooker and Liisa Jasinski, painting; Lynette Miller and Ben Nixon, photographic work; ceramic art by Hooker and sculpture in clay, cast glass and steel by Kristin Gudjonsdottir.
An ambitious exhibit entitled, Art on the
Bias, has artists speaking out through their art on political,
social and cultural topics. For example, a painting by Alex Clark
is called Costume for a Suicide Bomber and New Age Vanity,
a mixed media piece by Nancy Herman in collaboration with Joyce
Johnson, is a commentary on using religious symbols to sell expensive
"new age" products. Other artists in Art on the Bias
are Dwayne Barton, Connie Bostic, Brenda Coates, Kirk Fanelly,
Leigh Feinberg, Linda Larsen, Marya Roland and Alice Sebrell.
"This is art to challenge the viewer's assumptions and raise
some eyebrows," says Nancy Holmes, chair of the Curating
Committee.
The Art of Giving features small collage and assemblage pieces by Janette Grassi, Carol Beth Icard, Doni Jordan, J. Gary Kornmayer and Susan Lenz.
Also a part of The Art of Giving is
the gallery's new retail operation highlighting works by regional
artists. Reminiscent of a museum shop, the newly designed space
will display scarves, handbags, ceramic art, stained glass, notecards,
knitting needles, pillows, candy, books, baskets and more.
The gallerys "Walk & Talk" tour of the art conducted
by exhibiting artists will be Nov. 14, 2004, at 2pm.
