November Issue 2004
Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Amelia Rose Smith and J. Michael Kennedy
The Waterfront Gallery in Charleston, SC, will
present the exhibit, Catching Some Rays, featuring works
by Amelia Rose Smith and J. Michael Kennedy. The exhibit will
be on view from Nov. 6 through Dec. 31, 2004.
Catching Some Rays, as the show is entitled, features landscapes
and still life pieces that rely on sunlight and shadows to emphasize
and highlight the subjects. Smith will feature new work in watercolor
and pastel still-life, much of which includes flowers, herbs and
vegetables grown in her yard by her son, John.
Amelia Rose
Smith
Smith's colorful and fresh still life work
has been highly sought-after and collected by individuals and
corporations from around the country. This group of paintings
has been created throughout the summer in her light-filled home
studio as various plants and flowers native to the Lowcountry
have blossomed and created the wonderful colors she depicts in
the work. Smith also will be presenting new work painted en-plein-aire
around the Lowcountry from downtown Charleston to her own backyard
on an East Cooper tidal creek.
Working outside in the natural environment brings a dramatic new
look to many of Smith's newest work and even influences her studio
paintings.
J. Michael Kennedy
J. Michael Kennedy will present many new pieces
in oil created over the last several months that have also been
influenced by painting outdoors. Primarily a landscape artist,
Kennedy has spent the last year studying and painting the Lowcountry
skies, especially as the sun sets and the colors fade from pastel
shades of blue and yellow, to deeper reds, purples and gold. He
calls many of these pieces "skyscapes" as the emphasis
is on the dramatic sky and clouds.
Though most of Kennedy's work is created in his home studio, the
influence of outdoor painting is evident in work that is more
impressionistic and seems to capture the fleeting moments of a
quickly changing sunset. Kennedy will also include several paintings
in pastel, finding that the pastel medium actual helps him capture
the mood of a place more quickly and influences his oil paintings
as well.
