November Issue 2004

Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC, Features Works by Three Artists

Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC, will present the exhibitions, Mike Lavine Precious 017, on view in Rutledge Gallery and, MFA Thesis Exhibition: Jennifer Gilomen and Kata Billups, on view in the Elizabeth Dunlap Patrick Gallery. Both exhibits will be on view from Nov. 8 through Jan. 21, 2005.

The "Precious" works are a series of temporary, indoor installations built with millions of small, tropical hardwood shavings. Selected for their intense and unexpected natural colors, the shavings are formed into various shapes and sizes of mounds, waves, depressions, lines and flat expanses. Hand-formed and held together by friction, the topographically and biologically suggestive work is a sensual and meditative experience of color, form, texture and aroma.

Each Precious installation is a time-based work that encompasses building, completion, and destruction-reclamation periods. The first and third periods are performative in nature as viewers are invited to watch the work's development. Throughout the installation process, the wood surfaces oxidize as they are exposed to ultraviolet light, resulting in the colors migrating in intensity and value. As the work is built, some colors change quickly and dramatically, while others modify slowly.

Jennifer Gilomen and Kata Billups will be offering works for their MFA Thesis exhibition. Both Gilomen and Billups will also give a slide lecture on Nov. 18, at 8pm, in Rutledge 119. The lecture is free and open to the public.
