November Issue 2005
520 Gallery in Asheville, NC, Features Works by Group of Eight Artists
520 Gallery in Asheville, NC, will present
the exhibition, Bewitching, featuring works by eight of
Asheville's own artists including: Leslie Fay, Fred Guggenheim,
Kato Guggenheim, Karen Newgard, Dustin Spagnola, Liz Tomasetti,
Pattiy Torno, and Sarah West. Texture, light, form, glass, fabric,
metals and the impact of urban living have cast a spell over the
consciousness of these eight artists. The exhibit will be on view
through Nov. 20, 2005.
Fred and Kato Guggenheim, collaboratively balance squares of concrete
infused with colored glass that is supported by a steel wedge.
A reflection of living in a city nestled in mountains where skyscrapers
and homes appear to be perched upon hillsides. Like magic they
hang there in the balance defying gravity. The Guggenheims, like
a witch or a warlock, seem to gaze at urban life from a broom
above, capturing the way that light plays upon glass, steel and
concrete.
Dustin Spagnola
Dustin Spagnola on the other hand is exploring the dark alley ways and crumbling decay of the urban landscape. His work is gritty and captivating. His paintings capture the beauty of graffiti as it crumbles in harmony with the decaying brick walls, which were once a beckoning canvas of urban perfection. Spagnola's paintings "zoom in" on the urban landscape the way a photographer might zoom-in on a flower's petal bringing into focus what might have gone unnoticed had the artist passed it by.
Liz Tomasetti
Liz Tomasetti's painting pop the viewer right out of reality and into a dream world where children float in the sky, in life jackets, as if catapulted there by some mighty hand. Is the child floating or falling? Or is the child held there by some witch's spell? Either way the outcome seems uncertain.
Sarah West
Bewitching is certain to be a treat for all from Sarah West's intricate jewelry to Leslie Fay's colorful bird portraits. Come and join the 520 Gallery as we celebrate autumn in Asheville with some of our most talented artists.
