Artists' Guild of Spartanburg in Spartanburg, SC, Features Works by Doug McAbee
The Artists' Guild of Spartanburg in Spartanburg, SC, is hosting Happiness Is Boring, an exhibit of works by Doug McAbee, on view from Nov. 3 - 28, 2005, in the Spartanburg Arts Center Guild Gallery.
McAbee, a sculptor who lives and works in Spartanburg, is a graphic designer for Carolina Emblem Company. He earned a BA in Art and an MFA in Sculpture from Winthrop University where he teaches as an adjunct professor. He has built numerous public art installations and private outdoor works. McAbee's sculpture, Sweet Dreams, an installation of five steel chairs ranging in height from eight to 20 feet, is permanently installed on the front campus lawn at Winthrop University.
"Bold colors and whimsical imagery are essential elements in this body of work. A specific color has the ability to shift its meaning and its potential interpretation as it is filtered through the personal experiences of the viewer. The carefully chosen whimsical images will also vary in how they are interpreted," McAbee said of his sculpture.
"An image that at first sight may be reminiscent of a cartoon or comic childhood memory, upon further inspection may be found to reveal a more sinister message," said McAbee. "There is then, a duality, a battle of wills existing in the color and in the image. Each color and each image, while holding significant personal meaning to me, will almost always take on new meanings and interpretations to the viewer. These new interpretations are equally as valid and true as are my own."
