November Issue 2005
City of Charleston in Charleston, SC, Presents The Scrolls and Iraqi Art
Lucy Clark
Dylan Fouste
The City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs
will present The Scrolls, from Nov. 4 - 28, 2005, at the
City Gallery at Waterfront Park in Charleston, SC.
Charleston painter and printmaker, Mary Walker, started The
Scrolls as a reaction to the current state of global politics
in order to give artists from around the world a voice. Labeled
with the purposefully open-ended theme of "WHY?", packages
of materials and forwarding instructions were sent via FedEx to
artists and printmaking studios throughout the world. As more
artists became involved and the project gained attention, the
scrolls became a rolling conversation and collaboration between
artists in disparate lands, each artist adding their contribution
in the form of a print, drawing, or text. The result was a visual
discourse on war, torture, bombings, and the questions surrounding
human rights. Both national and international artists have added
their voice to the scrolls, which have traveled from Charleston
to studios in New York, Washington, Columbia, Savannah, San Francisco,
Chicago, McCllelanville, Baltimore, Ohio, Massachusetts, Vermont,
and Italy.
The exhibition will also feature 28 works in various media by modern Iraqi artists, first shown at Open Studio on Folly Beach, SC, this May, including pieces by Jaafer Mohammed Khader, Falah Al Anee, Sat'ar Darwich, Mohammed Jassim al Zubaidi, Ahmed Noussaief, Hadi Mahood, Mohammed al Qassim, and Asaad Y. Al-saghir. From streets of shrouded women to broken telephone lines, these works reference daily life in Iraq in the midst of war. These works are on loan from Air Force photographer Jacob Bailey, who collected them during his tour of duty in Iraq.
On Nov. 5, 2005, at 3pm, Mary Walker will present a curator's walk-through of the exhibit. On Nov. 11, 2005, there will be a Veterans Day multidisciplinary art program, starting at 6pm in the gallery.
The program includes performances of dance, spoken word and chamber music. Pam O'Briant of Charleston's Anonymity Dance Company will perform Cell 3 Wall 3, with choreography by Alain Charron and music by Henryk Mikolaj Górecki. O'Briant will also pair with Joceyln Nugent in a performance of Nugent's piece Swept Away, with music by Charlie Haden with Quartet West. Author, historian, and Mac Arthur fellow, Theodore Rosengarten, will give a brief talk on peace and South Carolina Poet Laureate, Marjorie Wentworth, will read an original piece inspired by the exhibition. In addition, select members of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra will perform a chamber music concert of Middle Eastern music.
