November Issue 2005

Julie Jacobson is the 2005 Young Artist of the Year of Contemporaries Group at the Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia, SC

Julie Jacobson of West Columbia, SC, was awarded the second annual Young Artist of the Year award in an evening soirée and silent auction hosted by the Contemporaries, the young professionals affiliate membership group of the Columbia Museum of Art, on Nov. 3, 2005.

The Contemporaries' Young Artist of the Year event featured young emerging artists between the ages of 18 and 35 in the state of South Carolina. Out of a field of 48 artists who submitted art portfolios, a juried committee of three art professionals selected 24 artists to display up to two artworks at the Young Artist of the Year soirée and silent auction.

The jurors reviewed the submitted artworks and selected Jacobson as the 2005 Young Artist of the Year based on the following criteria: originality of concept, technical execution, consistency, professionalism, and the degree to which the work was aesthetically interesting. The jurors for the 2005 Young Artist of the Year award were Harriett Green, director of visual arts at the South Carolina Arts Commission; Wim Roefs, independent curator and art consultant; and Mike Dwyer, exhibition designer and preparator at the Columbia Museum of Art.

Jacobson's winning artworks titled The point on my scissors is you and The Antiquation of the Bystander are charcoal drawings on paper. "Her works have obvious cartoonish qualities, but to me they relate more to a European 20th century fine art tradition that started perhaps with German Expressionism and accelerated after World War II in terms of expressionistic fierceness," commented juror, Wim Roefs.

Jacobson says of her own work, "I am interested in the ambiguous narratives of daily life. Humans put so much faith in verbal language. Other forms of communication often travel just below the radar. It is this discreet dialogue that reveals the most about our species and to whom and what we value and feel connected, to whom and what we discount and disregard. These things are not written on the wall, but are understood nonetheless."

A Contemporaries' Choice award, selected by a vote of attendees at the soirée and silent auction, was presented to Lauren Gregory. Gregory's works, Humphrey, Teri and Mr. Pants (oil on panel) and Thomas Watching 'The Hobbit' (oil on canvas) received the most votes and the admiration of the guests in attendance. The Contemporaries' Choice award recipient received a cash prize of $150 and a one-year membership to the Contemporaries of the Columbia Museum of Art ($50 cash value).

Jacobson, the 2005 Young Artist of the Year recipient, received a cash prize of $500, a Columbia Museum of Art Contemporaries' membership, and a reception in her honor at City Art Gallery (1224 Lincoln St., Columbia, SC) on Nov. 17, 2005, in conjunction with Columbia's Vista Lights celebration. Jacobson's artworks will remain on view at City Art through Nov. 26, 2005.

"City Art Gallery is honored to be working in conjunction with The Young Contemporaries (affiliate of CMA) to showcase young and emerging artists," says Wendy Wells. "Although City Art Gallery is a 'commercial' gallery, it is primarily interested in the integrity of art and those who make it. City Art Gallery is also interested in helping to define and nurture the young collectors and arts supporters of this next generation."

The Contemporaries is an affiliate membership group at the Columbia Museum of Art that seeks to bring young professionals together in appreciation of the arts and to support the overall mission of the museum. The group hosts a variety of social and cultural events throughout the year for arts enthusiasts ages 21-and-above. A portion of the Contemporaries' proceeds goes toward the Contemporaries' Art Acquisition Fund, designed to purchase contemporary art to add to the Columbia Museum of Art's permanent collection. Contemporaries' memberships are $50 for an individual and $75 for dual membership and include general membership privileges to the Columbia Museum of Art; memberships are valid for one year from the date of purchase.
