November Issue 2005
The Frame Shop and Gallery Art Café in Rock Hill, SC, Features Works by Holly Glasscock
A collection of plein air paintings by Holly Glasscock entitled, A Breath of Fresh Air, will be on exhibit from Nov. 3 - 30, 2005, at the Art Café, which is part of the Frame Shop & Gallery at Pat-a-Cakes Bakery in Rock Hill, SC.
Glasscock has launched a new endeavor to pursue
plein air painting to round out her current portfolio of works
consisting mostly of portraits and animals. "Plein air"
is a French term for "in the open air" and means painting
out of doors from life. It is a growing art movement that has
developed a large and active community of collectors.
Glasscock's plein air paintings are mostly landscapes even though
plein air can apply to portraits and still life's as well. Her
paintings serve as sketches of color and light and are often used
as references for larger studio paintings. This is a practice
employed by studio painters for hundreds of years, but has more
recently re-emerged in popularity with artists as well as collectors.
Glasscock received a grant to take a workshop on plein air painting
and for doing public paint outs in the local area. She says, "My
mission is to raise awareness and educate the community of York
County to the art of plein air painting and to encourage other
artists to enter the field of plein air painting." This project
is partially funded by the Arts Council of Rock Hill and York
County Small Grants Program, which receives funding from the SC
Arts Commission, the National Endowment for the Arts, the John
and Susan Bennett Memorial Arts Fund of the Coastal Community
Foundation of SC and the Rock Hill Tourism Commission. Glasscock
also states "we live in an abundantly beautiful part of the
country and owe it to our community and our future generations
to record this beauty through art."
