Hickory Museum of Art in Hickory, NC, Features Works by John Mode and les caison, III

The Hickory Museum of Art in Hickory, NC, is presenting the exhibitions: Art and Life of Havana, featuring photography by John Mode, on view through Jan. 8, 2006, and FIRST STEPS, an installation of drawing illustrations by North Carolina native les caison, III, on view through Dec. 11, 2005. This sketchbook presentation of unabashed ideas gives a glimpse into the working artist's studio renderings.

John Mode traveled to Cuba in the Spring of 2004 with a group from Appalachian State University. During his three-week stay, the sights, sounds and energy of the human and natural landscape captivated him. In his words, "While there I realized how beautiful the people and the country really were and it allowed me to see Cuba in a light that most Americans do not."

The Art and Life of Havana exhibition is a part of the Hickory Museum of Art's Local Artist program. This program provides area artists with the opportunity to exhibit their work in a three month, one person show. The mission of HMA is to serve the community interest and strengthen community ties. Mode is an area native and graduate of Appalachian State University with a BS degree in Industrial Science with a concentration in photography.

Mode's collection provides a glance into everyday life in Cuba, encapsulating the essence of its people.

les caison, III's extensive body of rough sketch illustrations will be on view through Dec. 11, 2005. Touted by the Asheville Citizen-Times as one of Asheville's creative "Young Guns," caison ("k-son") received a grant from the Asheville Arts Council for this project.

Says the artist, "Scratch paper, the space where primer meets cardboard, a notebook page containing an array of captions and scribbles: these portions of artwork which are usually painted over, or hidden within the sketch log, possess significant creative residue. Often their origin is to serve as a reference and/or to problem solve. These 'First Steps' are made with little extraneous thought, thus pure. It is these raw musings that deserve their own public viewing."

Born and raised in Greensboro, NC, caison earned a BFA in Studio Art from Appalachian State University. He is represented by TwoArtChicks Art Gallery in Greensboro, NC, and Solo Art Gallery in Winston Salem, NC. caison's art is collected and exhibited nationally. FIRST STEPS is his 13th solo art exhibition.
