Joie Lassiter Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Offers Works by Michael Simpson
The Joie Lassiter Gallery is proud to present Michael Simpson's Saluda Re-implacement. The exhibition will be on view from Nov. 3 - 30, 2005, at the gallery's new location on South Tryon Street.
Simpson is concerned with the loss of the environment and believes as it becomes more endangered so does the opportunity for humans to experience the sublime. He states, "In a land where our mental and physical landscapes are framed and faceted into small and smaller spaces, the "sublime" experience may be as endangered as the environment."
As the artist defines it, the sublime is a moment when through an experience with nature the human mind is lifted from a sense of awe to glimpses of wisdom and inspiration. Simpson believes that these experiences can also give humans a deeper respect for the natural environment.
Using intense colors and abstracted images of the natural landscape, Simpson strives to remind his viewers that sublime experiences still exist in nature. He states, "I hope that my paintings of fragmented terrain will bring to mind the spiritual and cultural importance of the natural sublime."
