West End Art Gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, Features Works by Jill Hoy, Cheryl McClure and Sharon Obee
West End Art Gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, will present a group exhibition of paintings by Jill Hoy (ME/MA), Cheryl McClure (TX), and Sharon Obee (NC) entitled, Dance With the Imagination. The exhibition will open on Nov. 4 and continue through Nov. 26, 2005. It will be the first opportunity for the public to view this large collection of work by these artists.
Jill Hoy
Jill Hoy earned a BFA from the University of California at Santa Cruz and also attended the New York Academy of Art in New York City. Her work has been included in numerous solo and group exhibitions around the country. The artist divides her time between Maine and Massachusetts and is reflected in her two bodies of work. One body is her Maine landscapes. The other body which is featured in the exhibit is reflective of her studio work. This work is primarily done from imagination, often inspired by the drawing books she has kept for many years. The works combine imagination with recollections of reality such as friends or moments witnessed in the unique experience of New York City.
"The figurative narratives are based on kernels of life's theatre; watching the merging of stranger's or loved ones, lives, how we touch energies, observe, exchange, and are gone," says Hoy. "In these paintings, there coexists an intimacy and alienation. A kinetic space, frozen in stillness. I choose from our rich parade of humanity, captured in drawings, memory and imagination, that which compels the painting into a power of timeless moment."
Cheryl McClure
Cheryl McClure, from Texas, has studied under several artists including Katherine Chang Liu, Fran Larsen, Alex Powers, Carole, Barnes, Jerry Seagle, Leo Smith, and Ron Pokrasso. Her work has been included in numerous solo and group exhibitions around the country and she is currently represented by 6 galleries throughout the country.
"Paint is what it's all about for me," says McClure. "The design of the work and the process of evaluating relationships are foremost in my mind as a non-objective painter. The relationships between warm and cool, textured or busy, smooth or restful, and organic versus the geometric are foremost in my mind. Organic shapes dominate my work so organizing those shapes is vital. There are days when magic happens and everything just flows."
Sharon Obee
West End Art Gallery will also be featuring the work of Charlotte, NC, artist Sharon Obee. For the past five years Obee has participated in several solo and group exhibitions and has been featured in several publications. "I view my work as shots of moments in my life, those times when there is activity all around me, yet I feel still," says Obee. "I see the beauty of that instant. I concentrate on capturing that moment. I perceive the mixture of life that surrounds me. I am indebted to the insight that alternate cultures, personalities and opinions provide. Each person adds a unique exquisiteness to this world. Movement, expression, and thought are endless in terms of the possibilities of combinations that fashion a person."
Dance With the Imagination, will feature over 60 paintings, including Jill Hoy's series entitled, Retrospective Bridgings. Please join us for this exciting exhibition of innovative craftsmanship that will lead you on a dance with your imagination!
