Artists' Guild of Spartanburg in Spartanburg, SC, Features Works by Scott Cunningham

The Spartanburg Artists' Guild will feature an exhibit of works by Scott Cunningham, at the Spartanburg Artists' Guild Gallery, at the Spartanburg Arts Center in Spartanburg, SC, from Nov. 3 - 30, 2006. Cunningham has been an artist, illustrator, graphic designer and art teacher in Spartanburg since 1983.

The exhibit is a mini-retrospective, featuring figurative works, including nudes and still lifes in traditional media as well as samples of commercial work done over the last 25 years, including architectural illustration, website design, graphic design and mechanical drawing.

"My primary goal for the exhibit is to let people know what I've been doing all this time," Cunningham says. "A lot of people wear a lot of different hats, and I realized that some people only know of one hat for me."

Cunningham compares drawing the figure to musicians practicing scales and arpeggios. "Lines are the scales of art. The countless ways they relate to each other create visual melodies and capture natural rhythms which animate visual representation," the artist explains. "To this end, gesture drawing refines the artist's drawing ability by forcing the eye to extract these lines and shapes from the subject. This improves the artist's perception and sense of proportion, and in doing so, it trains him to make judgments instantaneously and confidently, whether he is drawing the figure or some other subject."

Cunningham studied art in Europe while living in Lausanne, Switzerland, after graduating from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, with a BA in Studio Art with concentrations in Art History and Philosophy.

An exhibit of landscape works by Cunningham will open at Carolina Gallery Nov. 16, running concurrently with the Guild Gallery exhibit. This exhibit will continue through Dec. 22, 2006.
