Art League Gallery of Hilton Head on Hilton Head Island, SC, Offers Works by John Norlander

The Art League Gallery of Hilton Head is pleased to present John Norlander as the featured artist on view through Nov. 18, 2006. The title of his exhibition of oil paintings is Theme?-Color!.

As a busy executive in the hospitality industry, Norlander had little time to indulge his passion for painting. As CEO of the Radisson Hotel Corporation and creator of the Radisson Seven Seas Cruise Company, he and his wife Diane lived in many countries around the world. Upon retirement, they chose Hilton Head Island because of its vibrant art community. The first month on the island, Norlander took an art class from the Hilton Head Art League's studio workshops. After that, he was enjoying numerous other classes while honing his art techniques.

Oils are Norlander's preferred medium. He says, "I love the feeling of putting a thick layer of paint on the canvas and this is further advanced when I use a palette knife." He produces paintings with jewel tones which he achieves through underpainting with complementary colors and painting 'wet on wet.'" He tends to be an impatient painter and paints fairly rapidly. "This is especially useful while painting en plein air, when you don't want to lose the unique lights and shadows of a particular time of day." In the end, Norlander just hopes that the colors and energy of his paintings come through to the viewer.

Norlander's show at the Art League Gallery consists of paintings of palms ("I love having some palmettos in my yard and enjoy lounging under one when I'm in the Caribbean"); fruit ("I guess every artist paints fruit at some time"); places ("It's amazing how many paintable scenes you come across while traveling"); and our island ("What would an art exhibition on Hilton Head be without some scenes of local trees, lagoons and the ocean?")

Norlander is a member of the Apple Pie Painters and has exhibited his work with the group on several occasions. He claims the group provides the moral and technical support, as well as a chance to work with a group of fine artists who have become friends over the years.

Norlander has served on the Art League of Hilton Head's board of directors for 6 years and was chairman of the Art Academy for one year. His work was selected for the cover of the Arts Center's publication, "On Center" in the fall of 2003 and chosen for the Hilton Head Orchestra's Program cover in Feb. 2006.
