Artspace in Raleigh, NC, Offers National Juried Crafts Exhibit and Works by Nancy Dolce
Artspace in Raleigh, NC, is offering new exhibitions including: Fine Contemporary Crafts, a national juried exhibition on view in Gallery 1, from Nov. 18 through Jan. 13, 2007 and Japan and China: Glimpses of Continuing and Enduring Traditions, featuring works by Nancy Dolce, on view in the Upfront Gallery from Nov. 3 - 25, 2006.
Fine Contemporary Crafts is a juried exhibition recognizing individual artists involved in the design and creation of functional and sculptural contemporary crafts. Craftspeople and artists from all over the country submitted work in a variety of media. Work was selected by Susan Brandeis.
Brandeis holds a Master of Science degree in Art Education from Indiana University and a Master of Fine Arts in Textile Design from the University of Kansas. Since 1982 she has taught at the College of Design, North Carolina State University, where she coordinates studies in Fibers & Surface Design and the Anni Albers Scholars Program. She also serves as NCSU's Director of Graduate Programs for the Department of Art and Design.
Brandeis' own works of art have been published in the books Celebrating the Stitch, The Surface Designer's Art, and The Art Quilt, and in leading craft and textile art magazines such as American Craft, Fiberarts, and Surface Design Journal. Her work has been exhibited throughout the US and in England, Ireland, Finland, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, Colombia, at the International Biennial of Tapestry in Lausanne, Switzerland, and at the Textile Museum in Washington, DC. She is represented in numerous private and public collections, including the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian, Washington, DC. She has taught summer workshops at Penland School of Crafts (NC), Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts (TN), Haystack Mountain School of Crafts (ME), Oregon College of Arts and Crafts (OR), and the Split Rock Arts Program (MN). Brandeis is the recipient of three visual art fellowships from the North Carolina Arts Council and a member of the Academy of Outstanding Teachers, NCSU.
Nancy Dolce has traveled extensively, including
recently to China and Japan. Her month-long visit allowed her
to experience a large geographical area. Dolce's interest in both
the history of the two countries as well as the ongoing traditions
and cultures of the people, inspired a series of paintings. For
her exhibition, Dolce focused on creating small glimpses into
the lives of the people and the beautiful landscapes she experienced.
Dolce earned a BFA from Newcomb College, New Orleans, LA. She
completed graduate work at Newcomb College, Louisiana State University,
and Iowa State University. Her professional experience includes
teaching art as well as graphic design and photography in the
advertising department of a major oil company. She continues to
offer private art instruction. Dolce's work has been featured
in national exhibitions and she has been the recipient of numerous
awards.
