November Issue 2006
City Art in Columbia, SC, Offers Abstract Works for Vista Lights
City Art Gallery in Columbia, SC, will present
the exhibition, Abstraction, featuring works by Yvette
Cummings, Toni Elkins, Tim Turner and Howard Woody. The exhibit
is being offered in conjunction with "Vista Lights"
(Nov. 16, 5-10pm), opening on Nov. 16 and continuing through Dec.
23, 2006.
Toni M. Elkins attended Boston University and graduated from The
University of Georgia. Being an artist has been her passion and
profession for twenty-five years. Elkins primarily concentrates
on communicating a message of optimism and hope in our rather
cynical, segregated and dangerous world. One of her main beliefs
is that positive painting is as contagious as laughter and that
painting should be therapeutic to the artist as well.
The works of Howard Woody included in this show are from a twenty piece one man show of bronze and aluminum sculpture maquettes selected from a series of works blending contemporary sculptural concepts with environmental scale. The conceptual impact is to use forms that can be placed in public landscape settings such as parks, interstate highway rest centers and recreation areas where they can be a part of the general public environment so as to bring art to the public. The scale of these works would be such as to allow the viewer the opportunity to enjoy and relate to the sculpture by climbing on top of, below, through and around the structure, which may extend up to forty feet in its greatest dimension. Some of the sculptures are agate like or massive block shapes as well as totem vertical designs.
The works of Tim Turner are concentrated primarily to show a bond between the patterns of music and painting. Since graduating from Appalachian State University in 1977, Turner has displayed his work in numerous galleries and shows. In his "musical self-portraits" he combines the different timbres of colors and rhythms of composition on the palette as if they were violins, trumpets, saxophones, and other musical instruments. Turner believes that whether a composition is simple or complex in nature, it is "a unique voice that has its roots in the soul of daily existence."
Recent MFA graduate from the Department of Art at The University of Cincinnati, Yvette Cummings is currently exploring acrylic painting and collage. In this exhibition, just as she joins various diverse media into one, Cummings unifies common shapes in printed articles and ones that she paints in order to evoke one particular association or a set of connections to the viewers.
