November Issue 2006

Coker College in Hartsville, SC, Features Works by Tsar Fedorsky

Coker College in Hartsville, SC, is presenting a solo exhibition of portraits by the photographer Tsar Fedorsky entitled, Spitting Image, in the Cecelia Bell Art Gallery, through Nov. 10, 2006. A Massachusetts resident, Tsar will also be participating as a juror of student art work at the college in early November.

Combining photographs from several on-going bodies of work, the aptly named exhibit illustrates the creative relationship between Fedorsky's more personal self-portraits and the portraits of friends and well-known people. The portraits of notables are taken from a project about mentoring, which she has been working on for nine years. Included in the show are photographs of lawyer/professor Alan Dershowitz, magician Teller, movie critic Jay Carr, poet laureate Richard Wilbur, photographer Sylvia Plachy, poet/author/NPR commentator Andrei Codrescu, Dr. Nicholas Dodman, opera singer Phyllis Curtin, photographer/explorer/cartographer Bradford Washburn and the late World Checkers Champion Iser Kuperman.

The juxtaposition of these disparate series allows the viewer to see how the lessons learned from shooting self-portraits when Fedorsky has more time to experiment and take more creative risks, often become an integral part of her craft as a photographer. The artist explains that these creative methods often become invaluable when shooting portraits of others, particularly when photographing well-known subjects where the amount of time given for a shooting session is often limited. Fedorsky adds that portrait photography interests her most because it allows her to explore the power of image beyond a superficial likeness and delve into inner psychological states. Add to that the photographic elements of light and time, a picture isn't always what it appears to be.
