November Issue 2006

Havens Framemakers and Gallery in Columbia, SC, Offers Fall Show

Havens Framemakers and Gallery in Columbia, SC, will present the exhibit Distinctions, featuring the newest works by artists Jamie Blackburn, Diane Gilbert, and Rob Shaw.  The exhibition opens on Nov. 2 and will run until Dec. 1, 2006.

Jamie Blackburn

The exhibit features three artists with three distinct styles from Jamie Blackburn's abstract paintings, which are vivid in color and bursting with energy, to Rob Shaw's expressionistic oils which are interpretations of local southern subjects done in an impasto style. Rounding out the exhibit is Diane Gilbert (pronounced Dee-ann Gee-bear), a sculptor whose work is based on animals and insects which are fresh and lively and have strong visual presence.

Blackburn is a Columbia native that has been showing at Havens for over 3 years. His work is unmistakably his own, which has allowed him to create quite a loyal following of fans. Blackburn's works are done in a formalist style that uses shapes and patterns to generate movement and interest. The vivid colors and textures combine to make for very interesting compositions.

Shaw, also a Columbia native, uses his familiarity with the land of South Carolina to paint southern landscapes that are familiar but unique in their execution. He has a layering technique all his own. The texture created in his paintings makes Shaw quite easily recognizable from his contemporaries and give his paintings a very distinguished look. The unfocused patterns and deep beauty of nature can be found in Shaw's art.

Gilbert has worked for museums and interpretation centers. With the input of scientists working in the fields requiring her services, she constructs these objects, true to life, often built to withstand the harshness of time. Today, Gilbert lives her passion. Through the concept of a project aimed at sensitizing young and old to the world of minuscule insects like mosquitoes, ladybugs, and fire ants magnified 200 times with a scientific precision, take on a totally new dimension. In her pottery sculptures, she stays away from the rigidity of identical replicas to explore the world of wild life. With creative freedom, insects may become musicians; animals take on a new perspective and dimension.
