Horton Hayes Fine Art in Charleston Offers Works by Mark Kelvin Horton
Horton Hayes Fine Art in Charleston, SC, will
present the exhibit, Past Presence: Views of Ireland, featuring
works by Mark Kelvin Horton, on view from Nov. 3 - 26, 2006.
The show is inspired by the artist's recent travels to the Dingle
Peninsula on Ireland's southwest coast and other locations in
Ireland. The mystery and spirit of this ancient land is expressed
in these new works. The scenes range from majestic shorelines
carved by time to colorful streetscapes depicting long frequented
pubs and their patrons. Also portrayed are the remains of
ancient castles and fortresses as well as the stone-fenced fields
and old farmsteads which still largely define the Irish landscape.
Horton, who is known for his regional Lowcountry subjects, found inspiration and challenge in painting new locations. "The tenor of the waves, the rockiness, the light, even the grasses all differ from what we experience here in the Lowcountry," says Horton. "Also, I usually try to seek out unspoiled locations and do not include evidence of man's presence in my paintings. But in Ireland, rather than detract from the view, I found that the human imprint enhanced the landscape, adding interest and mystery.
