Joie Lassiter Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Offers Works by Lynn Boggess

Joie Lassiter Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will presents paintings by landscape artist Lynn Boggess. His dynamic yet peaceful scenes capture nature's raw beauty through his direct approach to the canvas. The exhibition, Lynn Boggess: New Paintings, will be on view from Nov. 3 - 29, 2006.

Focusing on nature, Boggess gives us meditative pieces of the landscape. Stylistically reflective of European and American landscape painting, for Boggess, nature in its pure state has the power to heal, refresh our eyes and our psyche. The paintings are works of resolution and contemplation.

"The most basic thing in art is nature," says Boggess. "It is the source of all form, light, space, color, texture. It's a very complex, dense fabric of different elements that you weave together to make a painting."

Boggess often paints on the bank of a river allowing him to incorporate land, river, and sky. Rather than presenting a vast panoramic view, each canvas focuses on a small piece of land, depicting densely grown vegetation and its blurred reflection in the gently rippled water. The artist chooses to exclude any evidence of human-life in his work, be it people themselves or man-made objects, resulting in the depiction of nature in its pure, raw beauty.

All colors are mixed right on the painting to create thick, luscious layers. Instead of brushes, Boggess favors cement trowels and a palette knife to create a low relief that makes the painting a textured landscape of its own.

Most contemporary landscape artists work in their studios using photographs for their inspiration whereas Boggess paints plein-air. He characteristically uses thick oil paint to access the greatest amount of empathetic intensity in the making of the object. His canvases are huge, massively thick, multi-layered, almost impressionistic surface of oil paint.

Boggess' impressive career has led to the inclusion of his work in public and private collections in the southeast and internationally.
