November Issue 2006
modern eye gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Woman Artists
modern eye gallery in Charlotte, NC, is presenting the exhibit, A Woman's View, featuring work by three Charlotte area female artists: Linda Luise Brown, Judith Cutler, and Elsa Turner. The show is comprised of medium to large-scale original works on canvas, panel, and paper and will run through Nov. 10, 2006.
The goal of this show is to highlight the woman's view of abstraction. Is it different from the male view? Does it possess unique qualities? Each artist approaches her medium with passion and conviction. The abstractions range from lyrical to expressionistic in style. To answer these questions, we will let the viewer reach his own conclusions.
Linda Luise Brown
Most recently a McColl Center for Visual Arts affiliate artist-in-residence, Linda Luise Brown arrived in Charlotte fifteen years ago from Oklahoma and created an active, arts-filled life as painter, educator and art critic. Her abstract, gestural and color-based painting "stems primarily from the study of three mid-twentieth century artists whose work remains viable today: Wassily Kandinsky, Roberto Matta, and Arshile Gorky" as the artist states. Brown explores the universal language of color in her work, which she believes "can conjure images, evoke memories, and provoke associations".
Judith Cutler
Judith Cutler, a renowned pastel artist, is "fascinated by the limitless way that color, form, and texture interact and translate on surfaces." Her laborious technique involves a building of layers using liquid and dry pigment. Cutler knows a work is complete when (she) has a strong emotional response to the total picture. In her work, the viewer will find a "juxtaposition of sensual color, changing forms, and shifting lines - all of which create a sense of strong energy and movement throughout the work".
Elsa Turner
Elsa Turner, a published collage artist, pulls elements of all types from her surroundings to create her work. She works with paint, fabric, slate, and metal to build her collages and constructions. Texture is the defining theme in all of her work, even in pure paintings. Nature, as well as her interest in archeology, plays a key role in her creative process. Turner's work combines life experiences, found objects, and nature into highly textured, sophisticated collages and paintings which conjure up past memories or breathe life into old forms.
We are delighted to share the talents of these very special women with Charlotte. We hope you enjoy the show.
