Sylvan Gallery in Charleston Offers Works by Susan Lyon & Scott Burdick
The Sylvan Gallery in Charleston, SC, proudly presents exotic Visions of India, featuring new works by Susan Lyon and Scott Burdick, on view from Nov. 3 - 30, 2006. The exhibit is being offered as part of the Charleston Fine Art Dealers' Association's (CFADA) Eighth Annual Fine Arts Weekend. Burdick will also be painting on location as part of this event for the first time on Sat. morning, Nov. 4, 2006, in Washington Park. The event is free and open to the public.
Exploring, sketching, and photographing while immersing themselves in the colors of the costumes and traditions of India, Burdick and Lyon were keen observers of the drama of life created by the tensions between Hindus and Muslims. In a country so steeped in the patterns of thought and action created by the religions, the strength of the caste system, the lack of separation between religion and culture, the artists were amazed at the access they had to more of the peoples since they were strangers with no religious or caste designation. Taking along 60 pounds worth of colored pencils and paper for the village children, the artists visited the world of dunes and camels as well as the towns where the entire populations worked at a single industry - pottery in one, textiles in the next village.
This is the second major show in Charleston
of works by these figurative artists, who live in rural North
Carolina and travel extensively throughout the world gathering
subject matter. Diverse cultures offer a wide variety of material
for their work. Burdick's mostly figurative work is inspired by
what attracts each of us - beauty, character, the story behind
the scene, as well as solitude.
Burdick's work has been featured in many magazines including covers
of such as The Artist's Magazine, Art Talk, Art of the West,
International Artist, American Artist, Southwest Art, and
Plein Air Magazine. A member of the Palette and Chisel
Club, Oil Painters of America and the Northwest Rendezvous Group,
Burdick's work has been shown throughout the United States.
Susan Lyon wishes to convey the beauty she sees around her and make the viewer smile. She is a member of the Palette and Chisel Club, Oil Painters of America and the Northwest Rendezvous Group and participates in the Masters of the West Exhibition at the Autry Museum in Los Angeles. Articles about her work have appeared in Art Talk, Art of the West, and Southwest Art. She has won awards for her work exhibited at the Palette and Chisel Club, the Oil Painters of America and the Northwest Rendezvous Show.
Scott Burdick will give a slide presentation
on Nov. 2, 2006, from 5-6pm at the Sylvan Gallery illustrating
the experience of India. The public is cordially invited. This
will be a perfect opportunity for collectors, artists and travel
buffs and is the complement to last year's lecture and show of
works from Tibet. These two talents, Burdick and Lyon, spent five
weeks traveling India in the northern region near the Pakistani
border. With a hired driver who acted as translator, they were
able to visit the little towns and villages and meet the farmers
and artisans.
