November Issue 2006
Wilkes Art Gallery in North Wilkesboro, NC, Features Three Exhibitions
The Wilkes Art Gallery in North Wilkesboro, NC, is presenting three exhibitions on view through Nov. 11, 2006, including: Original Works by Kevin Beck; the 27th Annual Blue Ridge Overview Juried Competition and Exhibition; and Faces of the Brushy Mountain Apple Festival featuring original works by Bob Bogue.
The exhibit, Original Works by Kevin Beck, features over 30 works on display in the Kulynych and Pardue Galleries. Beck has painted all his life. He paints in oils and pastels. He is collected broadly in the US, Canada, Europe and Australia and is included in numerous corporate collections including: Blue Cross-Blue Shield, Suntrust Banks, Tennessee Valley Authority, Wachovia Bank and the American Embassy in Copenhagen.
In addition to his own gallery, The Upstairs Gallery in Blowing Rock, NC, six galleries represent him. They include: Liz-Beth Gallery of Knoxville, TN, Somerhill Gallery of Chapel Hill, NC, ArtSource of Raleigh, NC, Arts ën Things of Morehead City, NC, Carmen's in Soloman's Island, MD and Primitive Images in Harbor Springs, MI.
Beck's preferred habitat is the out-of-doors. So it's only natural that he should be a plein air painter. While painting outside he encounters plants, animals, insects, weather and humans - all in their elemental states - unencumbered, unaffected and at peace. His stillness and immersion in the landscape causes him to merge with the environment - thus remaining unobserved. Beck's keen eye captures the commonly un-noticed - thus allowing the viewer of his work to expand his vision of the world. He captures the true essence of what he sees - not just the known or the visual.
This exhibit is sponsored by Jim and Luci Smoak.
The 27th Annual Blue Ridge Overview Juried Competition and Exhibition is on display in the Herring and Vickery Galleries. Over 50, local and regional photographers will have works on exhibit. Themed works were accepted for the competition in five categories. They are: Flora/Fauna, Architecture/Design, People, Landscape and Photographer's Choice. Carl Galie of Winston-Salem, NC, was juror for this year's competition. Galie's photography career began in 1991 when he began doing nature photography on a part-time basis while staying home to raise his two youngest daughters. Photographing on weekends, he began to build his portfolio, and in Oct. 1992, he was offered a contract by Picturesque, a stock agency located in Raleigh, NC.
Through Picturesque, Galie's photography has been used in advertising by Husqvarna, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, and RJR Nabisco, to name a few. In addition to advertising, Carl's photography has appeared in Outdoor & Travel Photography Magazine, Woman's World Magazine, and National Geographic's Scenic Highways and Byways.
Through Galie's own marketing efforts he has had his work published by the University of North Carolina Press, Outside Magazine, Ducks Unlimited magazine, and Backpacker magazine. Georgia Pacific Corporation used his photography in a national ad campaign to promote their Proterra line of recycled paper. The Sierra Club, Audubon, and BrownTrout Publishing have also used his images in their calendars. The 27th Annual Blue Ridge Overview exhibit is sponsored by Cassie Stone Photography.
Faces of the Brushy Mountain Apple Festival features original works by Bob Bogue. Bogue is a member of the Brushy Mountain Ruritan Club and has been creating original works themed on the Brushy Mountain Apple Festival since its beginning in 1978. Bogue was born 1921 in the Village of Saranac Lake in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. He attended a commercial art studio in New York City for two years and then worked for an advertising company as an illustrator from 1939 to 1971.
In 1972, Bogue moved to the Brushy Mountains. He worked from his home as an illustrator for the North Wilkesboro Savings and Loan for 12 years.
