Coleman Fine Art in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Mary Whyte
Coleman Fine Art in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Drawing Closer: Pencil Studies to the Final Painting, featuring works by Mary Whyte, on view from Nov. 3 through Dec. 1, 2007.
This radical solo exhibition of new works by Whyte traces her work from conception to end result. This glimpse into Whyte's creative process shows how her ideas manifest on paper after springing from a strong emotion, impulse, or image. Visit the show to peek into the mind of the nationally acclaimed artist.
Recognized by publications such as American Art Collector, American Artist, American Art Review and more, Whyte has long been heralded for her watercolor portraits of South Carolina's coastal Gullah people, their rich heritage and culture. A Midwesterner by birth, she discovered the Lowcountry when she moved to the area in 1991 and struck up a friendship with a handful of Gullah women of Johns Island, SC. Her sisterhood with these women has birthed scores of paintings, featuring the ladies, their families, and their daily lives, all set against the background of the rural South. Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley, just one of Whyte's many fans, affirms her prowess and authentic representation: "Mary Whyte is an extraordinary artist who so wonderfully captures the character and beauty of the Lowcountry's people and places."
Whyte's ever-evolving watercolors are exhibited in more than 300 hundred corporate, university, museum, and private collections in the States and abroad, and she is one of 50 artists to tour the nation in the prestigious museum show, From Sea to Shining Sea. In addition, Whyte is a prolific illustrator, teacher, and writer.
Coleman Fine Art will host a book signing and
gallery tour with artist and author, Mary Whyte, Dec. 1, 2007
at 2pm.
