The Haen Gallery in Asheville, NC, Features Works by Leigh Wen and Larry Gray
The Haen Gallery in Asheville, NC, is presenting the exhibits: Clouding Over the Four Seas, featuring works by Leigh Wen, on view through Nov. 14, 2007 and Larry Gray: New Paintings, on view from Nov. 15 through Dec. 31, 2007.
Leigh Wen
Leigh Wen's captivating work focuses on the four elements of Western cosmology: Water, Fire, Earth, and Air. Wen often works in large scale, building layers of color light to dark, and then scratching back into the wet surface, a process of subtraction that creates a textural pattern across the canvas. Her paintings express a tranquil movement, a powerful suggestion of the ebb and flow of the ocean or the passing of clouds across the sky.
Wen grew up on the island of Taiwan and thus water and the forces of nature play a large role in her work. She came to the Unites States to pursue an MFA at the University of Albany in NY. She has gone on to establish herself prominently in the art world and receive numerous awards and recognition including multiple participations in the Art in Embassies Program as well as the Pollack-Krasner grant. Her work has been shown across the country as well as abroad, and is included in numerous public and private collections.
Clouding Over the Four Seas is a presentation of Wen's latest body of work, a stunning group of elemental paintings that will certainly engage and enthrall the viewer.
Larry Gray's oil landscapes are expansive in depth and rich in color, providing magnificent atmospheric studies of time, light, and space. According to the artist "land is a primary influence" in his work. Gray's landscapes are not representational of any specific locale but rather composites of the many beautiful terrains he has held dear on his journey to becoming the accomplished artist he is today.
Gray resides in Pisgah Forest, NC, and his work has been shown and collected widely from coast to coast. Gray is originally from Tennessee, attended both the University of Georgia and Yale, then taught for many years at Humboldt State University in northern California before moving to western North Carolina. His work is now included in the collections of MOMA in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art, among others.
This body of work marks Gray's third exhibition at the Haen Gallery since it's inception in the Fall of 2006.
