McColl Fine Art and Shain Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Offers Works by Laura Buxton
McColl Fine Art and Shain Gallery in Charlotte, NC, are collaborating to present a retrospective and exhibition of new works by Laura Buxton. The retrospective of Buxton's work, featuring approximately forty paintings on loan from various private collectors at McColl Fine Art is on view through Dec. 30, 2007. Shain Gallery will present a one-woman show of new works which will be on view from Nov. 2 through Dec. 22, 2007.
The exhibition of new paintings at Shain Gallery will feature approximately thirty paintings, primarily landscapes and portraiture. This will be Buxton's first exhibit in Charlotte since her last show at Shain in 2000. Gabrielle Shain, founder and owner of Shain Gallery, explains that while Buxton, a British national, is an artist of international stature, her roots run deep in Charlotte and the Carolinas. Notably, she worked as an Associate Artist with distinguished fresco painter, Ben Long, on such well known projects as the Nations Bank Tower, and the TransAmerica Building, both in Charlotte.
Buxton attended the Chase Royal College of Art in London; later continuing her studies at the Signori Simi Studio in Florence, Italy. In 2005, she completed a six month residency at the Cité International des Arts, Paris. She has exhibited across Europe, the United States, and Canada earning critical acclaim, awards and prestigious commissions along the way. Commissions include: Drawings for the Parliamentary Building - House of Commons, an Official Painting of the Gulf War - British Army, and a series of portraits for the Royal National Theatre Company.
Buxton travels extensively and in 2000 published the aptly-titled, Ruined Landscapes, a book featuring a group of paintings done on location in Mostar and Sarajevo. Her skill as a draftsman, uncanny eye for color and her ability to see the inherent beauty in any given subject allow her to subtly translate the atmosphere of the scene to her viewer.
