Upstairs Artspace in Tryon, NC, Presents Home Grown Exhibitions

The Upstairs Artspace in Tryon, NC, concentrates on what is beautiful to behold in Polk County, NC, in two exhibits, Three Women/Three Cameras: Focus on the Foothills and Wondrous Things: Celebrating Local Craft. The exhibitions open on Nov. 16 and continue through Dec. 22, 2007.

Three Women introduces the photography in color and black and white of Carolyn Ashburn, Elaine Pearsons and Mara Smith. With grants from the Polk County Chamber Foundation and Polk County Community Foundation, the women spent one year documenting the pretty sights and dubious changes happening to this foothills region of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Subject matter includes mountain landscapes, small town streetscapes, buildings, animals, farms and people of all colors and careers. "It's a vivid time capsule," says Smith, "as we move into the 21st century."

Wondrous Things honors 20 distinguished craft artists of Polk County and environs. They are Ann Gleason and Claude Graves, ceramic art; Joe Cooper and Hank Heinzbarger, metalsmithing; Andrew Costine, Mark Gardner, Grant McCrorie, B. J. Precourt, David Prudhomme, Michael Reeves, wood turning and carving; Julie McIntyre, Mary Ann Merrill, Ursula Shuler, jewelry; Karen Dickson, Jean Pettigrew, Barbara Tilley, Cindy Walker, Holly Wilkes, textiles; Shane Smith, glass; and Joyce Fox, gourds.

A "Walk & Talk" tour of the art will take place on Nov. 25, 2007, at 2pm.
