Charleston Fine Art Dealers' Association Offers Exhibits for 10th Fine Arts Annual in Charleston, SC

Member galleries of the Charleston Fine Art Dealers' Association (CFADA) in Charleston, SC, will be offering exhibitions for the Tenth Fine Art Annual, taking place the weekend of Nov. 7 & 8, 2008.

The following is a short description of many of those exhibitions.

Helena Fox Fine Art in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Another Look, featuring paintings and works on paper by West Fraser, on view from Nov. 7 - 28, 2008.

Textures, form, light, color and their subtleties are the focus of nationally renowned American artist West Fraser's plein-air work. For the first time in his 30 years of award-winning paintings, Fraser will be offering drawings in this one-man show. Also on view are oil paintings and watercolors, a medium Fraser is revisiting after 15 years.

Coleman Fine Art in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, CONVERGENCE: Five Artists Paint New Orleans, featuring works by John Cosby, Marc R. Hanson, Joseph Paquet, George Strickland, and Mary Whyte, on view from Nov. 7 - Dec. 6, 2008.

This exhibition displays an exciting body of work which showcases the talent of five nationally acclaimed painters in mid-career. This past spring, John Cosby, Marc R. Hanson, Joseph Paquet, George Strickland, and Mary Whyte gathered as a group to collaborate on recording the essence of New Orleans - the city, her people and the surrounding waterway.  These painters came cross-country from their studios, from California to the Carolinas, converging in New Orleans with the sole purpose of painting for this show.

Robert Lange Studios in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Where Petals and Rain Fall, featuring contemporary narratives by Nathan Durfee, on view from Nov. 7 - 27, 2008.

In his first solo show with Robert Lange Studios, Durfee presents twenty new narrative paintings and a series of miniature ink drawings. The show depicts characters whimsically featured in an array of settings and situations.

The Sylvan Gallery in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Scott Burdick: Drawings and Paintings from Travels, on view from Nov. 7 - 25, 2008.

Burdick was born in Chicago, IL, in 1967 where his parents were quick to encourage his interest in art. "I spent a lot of time in hospitals as a child and remember my mother showing me how to transform simple shapes like circles, triangles, and squares into objects like planes, helicopters, and fish. It seemed such a magical thing and made spending so much time in casts and on crutches much more bearable."

Corrigan Gallery LLC in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Mid-River, featuring works by Lese Corrigan, on view from Nov. 3 - 30, 2008. Corrigan's new series celebrates the views of water and sky from the Charleston area's bridges with a post-impressionistic sensibility and a reverence for nature and life's transitory states.

Corrigan's post-impressionistic/expressionistic work brings to the mind of the viewer of such nineteenth-century icons as Cezanne and Van Gogh. Though under the influence of such greats, she has developed her own stylistic perspectives. This can be seen in her new series Mid-River. With this series she places the viewer looking out from the structural stability of a bridge and into the natural interaction of the water and sky.

Smith Killian Fine Art in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Streets and Structures, featuring new works by Jennifer Smith Rogers, on view from Nov. 7 - 21, 2008.

With this exhibition Rogers focuses her attention on the architecture and avenues of Charleston. Whether it is facades of historical buildings and churches, storefront windows, wandering alleyways, or rooftop views, the artist recreates with bold brushstrokes of strong color an intimate perception of her native town.

Wells Gallery in Charleston, SC, will present an exhibition of works by plein-air impressionist George Pate and world renowned watercolorist Earl B. Lewis, on view from Nov. 7 - 21, 2008.

Having recently relocated from Sante Fe to the South Carolina coast, Pate has found an abundance of subject matter in the imminently paintable landscape, filled with historical architecture and manifestations of distinctly different cultures. He works en plein air to render light, shade, and shadow with a strong design, vital color and thoughtful brush strokes.

Horton Hayes Fine Art in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Recent Travels: New Works by Mark Kelvin Horton, on view from Nov. 6 - 26, 2008.

Horton is widely recognized for his landscape paintings. In this series, Horton presents an array of Alpine, Mediterranean and other European scenes as well as several paintings from a recent trip to Monhegan Island, Maine. These paintings are notable not only for their outstanding portrayal of dramatic scenery, but because they convey the artist's keen appreciation of natural forms and exquisite light regardless of setting or place.

Some of the artists being featured in these exhibitions will be participating in the Painting in the Park event taking place at Washington Park in downtown Charleston on Nov. 8, starting at 9am. Those works will be sold later that day at the Third Annual Charleston Art Auction, starting at 6pm at Renaissance Charleston Hotel. The auction is a ticketed event raising funds for the Charleston County High School Art Departments. Call 843/722-0128 for reservations.
