The Cheryl Newby Gallery in Pawleys Island, SC, Features Works by Joseph Cave

The Cheryl Newby Gallery in Pawleys Island, SC, is presenting the exhibit, Joseph Cave - New Works, featuring paintings by South Carolina artist, on view through Nov. 8, 2008.

The exhibition will include twelve new oils by the well-known painter who resides in Georgetown, SC. Among the works, viewers will find Italian scenes inspired by a recent trip, as well as the harborscapes and river views for which Cave has received much acclaim. Of special interest to locals and visitors to the area may be two Litchfield Beach scenes which validate Cave's distinctive expressionist style.

Cave, who grew up in Columbia, SC, began his study of art at the University of Georgia (Athens) where he studied painting from 1954-58. He received much of his training at the prestigious San Francisco Art Institute where he received a BFA in Fine Arts in Painting in 1962. In 1964 he was awarded a Master of Fine Arts from San Francisco State University. He has taught at several institutions including The Memphis Academy of Art, Southwestern at Memphis, San Francisco Art Institute, and San Francisco State University.

Cave's landscapes and still-life paintings have been exhibited throughout the United States and abroad. Trained as an abstract expressionist, Cave is known for his inspired use of color, bold lines, and shadows which he incorporates into his paintings. He resides in Georgetown, SC and the Georgetown harbor, the Sampit River, and other marine scenes along the Carolina coast are often the subjects of his paintings.
