Flood Gallery Fine Art Center in Asheville,
NC, Features Works by Robert Dunning
Flood Gallery Fine Art Center (Flood Gallery) in Asheville, NC, will present the much anticipated solo-exhibition of Robert Dunning, Department Chair and Professor of Art, from the University of North Carolina at Asheville. This exhibition, on view Nov. 7 through Dec. 13, 2008, exemplifies Dunning's distinctive ability to blend invented abstract biomorphic forms with figurative imagery.
"The strength and appeal of Robert Dunning's
work lies in his ability to pull together a multiple media piece
that suggests the illusion of depth not only through drawing or
shading techniques, but also through low relief that is built
up in numerous overlapping planes. For the viewer, the formation
of layers upon layers of cracked, encrusted, or submerged elements
evokes a sense of an ancient artifact deteriorating before our
eyes," says Flood Gallery board member and UNCA Professor
of Art History, Dr. Cynthia Canejo.
Dunning received his Bachelors of Fine Arts from East Carolina
University in 1979, taught secondary and collegiate level art
shortly after, and received his MFA from Indiana University in
1987. Dunning's artwork has been exhibited in solo and group shows
throughout the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. His
works are featured in various private, corporate, and university
collections such as Kansas City Art Institute, the Asheville Art
Museum, North Carolina State Government Permanent Collection,
and many others. Dunning currently lives and works in Western
North Carolina, where he teaches printmaking, drawing, collage
assemblage, and 2-D and 3-D design for the University of North
Carolina at Asheville.
Dunning's artwork, constructed layer by layer utilizing collage,
printmaking, drawing, painting, and relief work, explores the
themes found within innocence, fertility and growth as well as
the privately spiritual and psychological forces that influence
them. His intuitively developed compositions reveal layers of
texture and the overall character of Dunning's constructed surfaces,
thus completing the themes of growth and the effects of withering
and aging.
