November Issue 2008

The Haen Gallery in Asheville, NC, Features Works by Jane Filer and R. Sierra

The Haen Gallery in Asheville, NC, is presenting the exhibit, Visual Dialogues: Jane Filer & R. Sierra, on view through Nov. 20, 2008.

Jane Filer

Jane Filer and R. Sierra share an interest in the natural world. Filer lives and works in the woods near Chapel Hill, NC, and her rich surroundings play a great role in her work.  The whimsical canvases often contain fantastical creatures interacting on rolling hills and valleys of all colors. Filer uses historical and prehistoric references to explore the story of humanity and her place within it.

In her Asheville studio Sierra works in abstract, starting with unprimed canvas on the floor and allowing her process of pouring, staining, scraping, and scratching the paint to take over. She allows the textures, layers, and colors that arise to form each complex piece, and in this way her work reflects the processes of nature.

Visual Dialogues is an exhibition dedicated to the themes of self-discovery and a relationship with nature these two artists have investigated in their work. On display will be Filer's vibrant canvases: each a multi-dimensional narrative expressed with colorful characters and elements of landscape, and Sierra's abstract work: an assemblage of color, texture, and technique aimed to elicit emotion in the viewer. The work of both women expresses a deep connection with the natural world.
