RedSky Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Melisa Cadell and Sarah Faulkner

RedSky Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will present the exhibit, The Nature of Being, featuring works by ceramic artist Melisa Cadell and encaustic painter Sarah Faulkner, on view from Nov. 14 through Dec. 31, 2008.

Melisa Cadell

Cadell has received national acclaim for her figurative ceramics. She is interested in the figure and the spiritual being that is represented by it. "I wish to record the triumph of the human existence as I have observed it in the strong people who have entered my life. Clay allows me the opportunity to form figures who sing of their past, and who are witnesses of their history." Cadell's fascination with the human form became increasingly evident as she strove for complex simplicity in style and content, as a painter and mark maker. "The figure is more than a body" - it houses her subjects' thoughts, beliefs and fears.

Sarah Faulkner

In contrast, Sarah Faulkner's encaustic paintings focus on the tranquility of nature and invite the viewer to enjoy "just being". She seeks to capture, in her work, the important relationships humans have with trees, flowers, animals and all things in the natural world. These relationships offer a sense of peace, grounding and calm which is so essential to the quality of one's life. To combat the dark times in which we are living, the artist paints to bring joy and hope to her work. In addition to this positive force, Faulkner embraces the importance of simplicity. She truly believes staying connecting to our natural environment will help us all to stay connected to our human environment. The cool tones and peaceful natural scenes provide an exciting juxtaposition to the struggle represented in Cadell's figurative ceramic pieces.

Currently, Cadell owns Cadell Studios in Bakersville, NC, where she works primarily in figurative clay. Her work has been exhibited in galleries throughout the east coast and published in several national arts publications. She is a member of several esteemed professional organizations such as the Piedmont Craftsmen and Tri State Sculptors Association. Cadell grew up working under her father as an apprentice in his art bronze foundry. She received a BFA in drawing, painting and art education from the University of North Texas. Cadell has also studied in France, Switzerland and Italy.

Faulkner lives in Burnsville, NC, and feels blessed to have the opportunity to do what she loves on a full-time basis. The beauty and peace found in the Carolina Mountains is the inspiration for many of her paintings. Faulkner grew up on a farm in Virginia and attended Northeastern University, where she studied art history, architecture and visual arts. She spent time working as a gallery director in San Francisco and Santa Fe before moving to NC and pursuing a full time career creating art.

RedSky Gallery features original works on paper and canvas, sculpture, ceramic, glass, studio furniture, art-to-wear, jewelry, and more. Over 500 regional and national artists are represented.
