Spencer Art Gallery II in Charleston,
SC, Features Works by Jan Sasser
Spencer Art Gallery II in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Natural Perspective II, featuring new and recent additions to Jan Sasser's striking series of oil studies celebrating nature. The exhibit will be on display from Nov. 7 - 14, 2008.
Those familiar with Sasser's work know of her passion for nature declared in richly detailed and vividly real canvases. This year's works offer visions of glowing summer clouds above a vast marsh-lined tidal creek, illusions cast in blackwater as submerged leaves mingle with reflections of waterlillies, the keen eyed stillness of a green heron perched on a dewy morning in the cypress swamp, and the magic of bayou waters illuminated by the Florida sunset.
Sasser's "nature portraits" are developed slowly and reverently in multiple blended layers and glazings of translucent color. As a young woman, native Alabamian Sasser took a sabbatical to immerse herself in art courses at a local university. Like family before her she loved drawing and painting but was raised to view art as a "private pleasure" rather than a practical career. Her work in social services proved quite rewarding but also quite draining and in conflict with the energy and time needed to develop her art. Throughout her life and career Sasser, like naturalist Rachel Carson, found a "sense of wonder" exploring nature. Walks in the woods and foraging on the beach served as "a source of strength and renewal" in a stressful modern world. When the opportunity to pursue painting arose, there were no doubts about her choice of subject.
Sasser returned to painting full time in 2003. She continues to hone the skills to share her "sense of wonder" with viewers. A Charleston resident since 1989, she currently displays year round in Spencer Art Gallery II. She is an exhibiting member of the Charleston Artist Guild, has taken ribbons in multiple area shows, and is a juried participant in Charleston's annual Piccolo Spoleto Outdoor Art Exhibit. Her works hang in hospitals, offices, and private collections in more than a dozen states.
