Works by Cathie Murdaugh at North Charleston City Gallery
The North Charleston Cultural Arts Program, in North Charleston, SC, will be hosting an exciting exhibit of works by clay artist, Cathie Murdaugh, at the North Charleston City Gallery. The exhibit entitled Rising from the Ashes will be on view through Dec. 31.
Murdaugh is the current Artist-in-Residence for the City of North Charleston and her exhibit entitled Rising from the Ashes will display a wide variety of styles and technique, learned over years of study. A graduate of Winthrop University, Murdaugh has done graduate work at the University of South Carolina, College of Charleston, and the Citadel. She participated in summer workshops at the Penland Crafts School from 1983-89 and served as a studio assistant to master artisans, her works have been published in Hand-Formed Ceramics - Creating Form and Surface by Richard Zakin.
During her art career, the artist has created Raku pottery; clay masks depicting African, Native American, Mayan, and Pacific Northwest heritage; murals; angels; and Native American forms. Samples of these will be displayed during the exhibit.
Landscapes in clay, called Earth Eggs, exemplify Murdaugh's interest in the landscapes of the Southwest and the primitive firing techniques and coloring of the earth's surface. The egg shape is her personal perception of the Earth as a fertile, nurturing and evolving shape. On some forms she has carved mountains, placing cliff dwellings, kivas, and ladders inside their egg-forms. Water sources such as waterfalls, rivers, or wells are used as symbols of the earth's renewing force. The tradition of Native American potters has greatly influenced her works, as evidenced by the beautiful pieces in the collection.
