Brian Rutenberg Returns to Charleston at Tippy Stern Fine Art

Recent works by Brian Rutenberg are on view at Tippy Stern Fine Art in Charleston, SC, through Dec. 31.

Rutenberg, a native of Myrtle Beach, SC, currently lives and paints in New York City. But not too long ago he was living and working in Ireland. In 1997, Rutenberg received a Fulbright Scholarship to Ireland. The scholarship provided an Artists Work Programme Studio Grant for study at the Irish Museum of Modern Art.

Rutenberg describes his work as, "organic abstractions" usually based on bodies of water and music, more recently influenced by the writings and compositions of classical Canadian pianist Glenn Gould. The paintings in this exhibit include mostly small works and several large scale paintings. They are characterized by thick application of paint, swirling in circular motion.

As characterized by curator and gallery owner Tippy Brickman, "Brian Rutenberg's generous strong and rich use of paint, color and stroke are truly unique. You walk away from the paintings and take the images with you. The works are hauntingly beautiful and lush, and of the kind you want to be around and live around".

Rutenberg received his BFA from the College of Charleston and his MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. He has had numerous exhibitions throughout North and South Carolina, as well as Dublin, Ireland, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Toronto, Ottawa, and Vancouver.
