December Issue 2002

Artspace in Raleigh, NC, Features Works by Ashley Gruber Clark and Dianne Rodwell

The Artspace in Raleigh, NC, will offer several exhibitions including, Day Dreams, featuring works by Ashley Gruber Clark in the Artspace Lobby, and Resist: Working with Wax, featuring works by Dianne Rodwell in the Artspace Upfront Gallery. Both exhibitions will be on view from Dec. 6 - 28, 2002.

Clark works in mixed media and collage. Paint, paper, roofing shingles, various fibers, and other materials are layered, painted, torn away, and reworked. Calendars, to-do lists, notes and other personal and cultural relics are buried within layers of time (and revealed through erosion). The result is intended to be a rugged and exuberant testimony to the beauty and meaning in common objects, materials, and the detritus of daily life.

The works on exhibit in Day Dreams grew out of Clark's experimentation with materials, and her determination to stay close to real day-to-day experience. The works are a hybrid of painting and relief sculpture, utilizing paper bags as a surface to paint upon. Clark's hope is that the works assert the integrity of found objects, and their significance as icons of contemporary culture.

Clark holds a BA in Studio Art and English from UNC-Chapel Hill and an MFA in painting from UNC-Greensboro. She has exhibited throughout North Carolina and is represented by Green Tara Gallery in Chapel Hill. Her work is in many collections, including the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh.

Artspace is a non-profit visual art center dedicated to presenting quality exhibitions and education programs in an open-studio
environment. Guided tours of exhibitions and artist studios are available for groups of 10 or more.

Dianne Rodwell's exhibition, Resist: Working with Wax, will open in Artspace's Upfront Gallery. The exhibition will offer two- and three-dimensional works including papered glass, batik on rice paper paintings, and electric bombori lanterns. All pieces in the exhibit have been created using wax as a resist in the painting process.

Rodwell has been painting full time for almost thirty years. She has been a resident Artspace artist since the building opened in 1986. She is very interested in exploring new media and is always seeking new ways to express her artistic passion. The NC native has exhibited extensively, receiving many awards including two National Grumbacher awards. Her works are collected worldwide. Locally, she is noted for her colorful oil rendition of the Raleigh skyline, Wish You Were Here!
