December Issue 2002
Charleston County Public Library in Charleston, SC, Features Only Exhibition by Dr. Dennis Bernard
Dr. Dennis Bernard will share his work during the month of Dec., 2002, in the Saul Alexander Gallery, located on the first floor of Charleston County Public Library's main branch library in downtown Charleston, SC. Dr. Bernard's exhibition of paintings is entitled, Journey. This will be his first and only exhibit.
Dennis Orrin Bernard has 15 years of college and higher education, all of which are in the health professions and none in fine arts. He began painting four years ago after reading biographies of Vincent Van Gogh, Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko. The influence of these artists is obvious in Bernard's work, and he struggles to develop his own style. His studio is located in the back yard of his home. To the close observer, bits of twigs, leaves, and trails of insects that have crawled through the wet paint, as well as the insects themselves, can actually be seen.
When asked to explain his paintings, Dr. Bernard refers to Jackson Pollock who said, "To explain my paintings is to destroy them." He believes that each observer will have a different "take home" message - hence, the magic of art. Each painting is intensely personal and none have ever been sold.
