Cheryl M. Newby Gallery in Pawleys Island, SC, Features New Works by Claire K. Farrell

The Cheryl M. Newby Gallery in Pawleys Island, SC, is featuring the exhibition, Pawleys On My Mind, featuring recent works by Claire K. Farrell, on view through Dec. 20, 2002.

"Our gallery first exhibited the paintings of Claire K. Farrell, otherwise known as "Suzy" to her long-time friends, two years ago," says Cheryl M. Newby, adding. "That first show, Carolina and Beyond, featured a group of Carolina Lowcountry landscape paintings, along with a body of work that arose from a trip to Italy made by Farrell during the summer of 2000. The exhibition was an overwhelming success and we have been constantly queried as to when we might feature her paintings again. Ever diligent in her love of painting, Farrell returned to Italy this year to study and paint. Upon her return, she began to paint for this exhibition. She chose to paint Pawleys, though freshly returning from the Italian countryside. We think we understand why."

The artist had the following to say about her exhibition: "Somehow, there is nothing like a trip to the beach. For those of us fortunate enough to be from South Carolina, that could mean a number of places; Isle of Palms, Edisto, Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head, or Pawleys Island.

For our family, Pawleys has been a favorite vacation spot for at least a generation; for my husband's family, much longer. We have fond memories of creaky old beach houses, crabbing from the docks along the creek, fishing in a john boat, gathering shells on a long walk to the end of the island, or swimming in the warm ocean water. Sometimes the best moments came when gathering on a 'lookout' for an afternoon drink while our children played in the sand. For many of us who love Pawleys Island, we remember a time before places like Lachicotte's and Marlow's were replaced by shopping centers and upscale restaurants; when Highway 17 was never crowded and when the Hammock Shop sold only hammocks. In spite of the inevitable progress, however, the warm summer days, beautiful sunrises and sunsets, the rolling ocean, the sea breezes, the cries of gulls, and happy vacation memories remain.

Because Pawleys Island is such a special place, I have chosen it to be the main theme for this exhibition. My goal was to capture in paint the pleasant memories and experiences, and to share them with you, the viewer."
