City Gallery in Charleston, SC, Hosts Exhibit of Student Work
In Charleston, SC, the City Gallery at the
Dock Street Theatre will present an exhibit of mixed media by
students of The Storefront School for the Arts program, from Dec.
6 - 31, 2002.
The Storefront School for the Arts is a project directed by the
City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs, in collaboration
with Creative Spark Center for the Arts, and the Housing Authority
of the City of Charleston. Founded in 1984 by the City of Charleston
Office of Cultural Affairs, The Storefront School for the Arts
offers children an opportunity to experience the creative and
vibrant spirit of the arts that transcends language, race, and
economic barriers. Taught by local professional artists, the curriculum
features eight different arts disciplines: dance, theatre, fabric
art, sculpture, drawing and painting, creative writing, vocal
and instrumental music and jewelry making. The program has always
been free and targeted to all children who participate in the
Summer Lunch Program operated by the City's Recreation Department
and the Charleston Housing Authority. The Storefront School for
the Arts program provides students with multi-cultural experiences
and improves relationships between children through the increased
understanding of many different cultures, ancient and modern.
In 2002, planning began for an expanded Version of The Storefront School for the Arts under a partnership including the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs, the Charleston Housing Authority, and Creative Spark which received a generous grant from The National Endowment for the Arts with additional funding from the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelly Foundation. The expanded program for children ages 6-12 includes an after-school program 2 days per week, 40 weeks per year in 5 Housing Authority sites around Charleston and a 4-6 week intensive program for students in the Summer Lunch Program administered at Housing Authority sites. In addition to these structured learning experiences, The Storefront School for the Arts students will have the opportunity to perform and present visual arts exhibitions as part of the Piccolo Spoleto Festival, MOJA Arts Festival, Charleston Farmers Market, and Holiday Magic at Marion Square and attend arts performances and exhibitions by some of Charleston's finest arts organizations.
Ultimately, the centerpiece for The Storefront School for the Arts is that each child is empowered to be the author, the artist, the musician, the dancer, the actor, or the poet.
