December Issue 2002
Holiday Studio Tour in Mitchell and Yancey Counties, NC, on Weekend of Dec. 7 and 8, 2002
A perennial favorite, the Holiday Studio Tour, sponsored by the Toe River Arts Council, is scheduled for Dec. 7 & 8, 2002, from 10am to 5pm each day. For the tour, many of our local world-class and emerging artists will open their studios to the public, offering a behind-the-scenes view of arts and crafts workspaces. All will provide opportunities to purchase a variety of creative works directly from the artists. This self-guided tour is free to the public and is made possible with the special Holiday Studio Tour map and arrowed "Tour" signs that are placed at strategic locations on the days of the tour.
Over 125 artisans and galleries participate in 80 locations in Mitchell and Yancey Counties in the mountains of Western North Carolina. The tour features studios in the towns of Bakersville, Burnsville, and Spruce Pine, as well as the communities of Celo, Toe Cane, Penland, Red Hill, Green Mountain, Buladean, Micaville, and Little Switzerland. The map has studio locations and information on restaurants and lodging in the vicinity.
Some of the crafts found on the tour include: baskets, blown and cast glass, pottery, porcelain, jewelry and jewelry boxes, handmade paper, handspun yarn, handwoven goods and garments, wood carvings and one-of-a-kind handmade books, soap and scents, paintings, beeswax candles, ornamental iron, silkscreen prints, handmade tiles, and quilts.
The TRAC Center, the Toe River Arts Council's facility, will again be featuring a Holiday Tour Preview Exhibition, which will be on view from Dec. 3 - 21 (hours: Tues. - Sat., 10am-5pm). During the Tour Weekend the TRAC Center has expanded hours: Fri., 10am to 8pm, Sat., 8:30am to 6pm and Sun. from 8:30am to 5pm. Maps, additional directions, information on local artists, and food will be available. The TRAC Center is located at 269 Oak Avenue in Spruce Pine.
You can also pick up a map the day of the tour
