WDO in Charlotte, NC, Offers Exhibit of Contemporary Danish Glass
WDO Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will present an exhibition of contemporary Danish glass, including works by Steffen Dam, Trine Drivsholm, Micha Maria Karlslund, Tobias Møhl, and Stig Persson, from Dec. 2 through Jan. 31, 2004.
The studio glass movement
in Denmark is generally considered to have had its beginning in
1972 in connection with Finn Lynggaard's exhibition of his first
works in glass at Den Permanente. Soon thereafter, studio
glass gained a foot hold in Denmark, and within a few years, an
actual movement arose, characterized by an almost explosive growth
in the number of active artists. Artists looking for new
means of expression saw glass as a natural choice. Glass
had no avant-garde past. The first generation of studio glass
artists therefore stepped onto virgin soil, but to those that
dared to truly dive into the magic world of glass, this material
proved to hold untold artistic and expressive potential.
Stig Persson is one of the most important representatives of a
very raw and masculine sculptural use of glass.
Mica Maria Karlslundjust recently had a major show of her new
"cell" series at the Glasmuseet Ebeltoft in Denmark. "The
sand cast cells are gathered together on my table in the studio. Clouds
race across the sky, and the sun breaks through. Suddenly
the cells begin to glow from within," says Karlslundjust
about her work.
Steffen Dam is an outstanding technical talent and a gifted artist. His tense, mildly cynical perfectionism finds its form in a taut, pure line, which in turn is broken up just as it is about two dominate.
In Denmark's number one glass-making town, Ebertof, the large white-painted house at the harbour serves as the glass works and gallery for Tobias Møhland and Trine Drivsholm. They mainly produce original works, but they also have a smaller production of elegant articles for everyday use.
This exhibition was made possible in part by Danish Crafts.
