December Issue 2003
Women's Oriented Art Event Benefit to be Held at Old City Jail in Charleston, SC, on Dec. 11, 2003
Most prison breaks involve well-laid out plans to escape from jail, but the innovative women of "Women Rock" will break into the Old Charleston City Jail in downtown Charleston, SC, on Dec. 11, 2003, from 6-10pm. A decadent evening of arts, food, wine, live music, poetic performances, and holiday shopping will be provided to all attendees along with a chance to win some of the show's featured artwork in a raffle. Admission is $10, and tickets are available at the door.
During the benefit event, women artists and musicians will create a fun, festive atmosphere behind the bars of the former City Jail, currently home to The Charleston School of The Building Arts. A local, dedicated group of volunteers and various donating organizations will make the jail the most welcoming women's prison in Charleston by including a well-rounded evening of entertainment. Men and women alike are encouraged to "break in" and do some holiday shopping.
All proceeds from the "Women Rock"
benefit will be donated to scholarships that foster artistic creativity
in local underprivileged children. Beneficiaries include The Gibbes
Museum, The Charleston Children's Museum, SoBA, the Center for
Photography and JIVE, Ann Caldwell's children's music program.
The "Women Rock," art show series is dedicated to increasing
awareness of female artists and artisans in the Lowcountry while
raising money for worthy, local causes. The first "Women
Rock" event, held at The Boathouse Restaurant in Aug., 2003,
played host to around 600 attendees. Artists at the second "Women
Rock" show will display jewelry, Christmas items, paintings,
leather goods, photography, handbags, ceramics, wooden crafts,
2 and 3 dimensional art, glass sculpture, mosaic mirrors, clothing,
hats, scarves, rugs, various textiles, musical compilations, locally-written
books, children's items (clothing and toys), and more. The artists
will be on hand to answer questions and join in the festivities.
All art at the jail will be for sale.
Artists included in the show are Tonsenia Wiley, Mary Hunter Jackson, Tammy Minton, Heather Hawkins, Kate Temple, Leigh Magar, Catherine Brennan, Kate Boughn, Molly Myers, Paige Hathaway Thorn, Mary Lynn Sheppard, Sally Lydic, Beth Coiner, Leigh Alexander, Angela Hall, Karen Vematio, Michelle Barnwell, Kelle Pollock, Samantha June, Karen Vematio, Deanne Pace, Shannon Pryor, Joyce Byrum-Crosby, Christan York and Christi Sanford.
